TO systems - Thermal Oxidizer
Thermal oxidizers (TOs) treat industrial exhaust air containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The incoming exhaust air is preheated in a recuperative heat exchanger before entering the combustion chamber, where it is oxidized at approx. 750–1,100 °C. Heat is recovered from the hot treated gas. The temperature, residence time, oxygen supply and mixing are designed to achieve the required destruction efficiency. Additional constituents may require downstream treatment.
The combustion chamber is lined with high-temperature resistant ceramic insulation, which protects the system body and ensures uniform temperature distribution. Heating is usually carried out by a gas or oil burner; electrically heated versions are also available as an alternative.
Recuperative TO systems may be suitable where regenerative media are unsuitable. Dust, water content and silicon compounds are assessed during design; pretreatment may be required. Organic liquids or process gases can also be injected directly into the combustion chamber and thermally treated.
Due to its robust design and simple system structure, the TO offers high operational reliability and reliable compliance with legal emission limits.
